An ancient Hindu Vedic festival dedicated to Surya Dev (the Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya, thanking them for sustaining life on Earth and requesting longevity and prosperity.

Spiritual & Cultural Significance

Celebrated with high purity and deep devotion along riverbanks, lakes, and ponds, especially throughout the Terai and Kathmandu Valley.

Key Rituals & Days

  • Nahay Khay: Purification bath and sattvic meal preparation
  • Kharna: Full day fast followed by sweet kheer offering
  • Sanjhiya Arghya: Evening water offering to the setting Sun
  • Bhorwa Arghya: Dawn offering to the rising Sun accompanied by Thekua and fruit Prasad
